Surface Area of a Cube

Concept Explanation

Surface Area of a Cube

Surface Area of Cube: All the six faces of a cube are squares of the same size. i.e. for a cube we have l=b=h. Thus, if l cm is the length of the edge or a cube, then to calculate the total Surface Area of Cube we have to add the sum of area of all the faces of a cube.

Area ;of ;one; face= l X l= l^2

Area ;of ;six; face= 6 X l^2= 6l^2

Example:- Find the surface area of cube whose edge is 11cm.

Solution:- We know that the surface area of a cube=large 6(Edges)^2

Here, edge=11cm

large therefore     Surface area of the given cube=large 6times (11)^2cm^2=6times 121=726cm^2

Example: Find the edge of a cube whose surface area is 1350 sq cm

Solution: Let the edge = x cm

Surface area of Cube is = 1350 sq cm

6x^2=1350;cm^2

x^2=frac{1350}{6};cm^2= 225 ;cm^2=15^2 ;cm^2

x= 15 cm

Example: A cubical box is to be painted on all the side.Find the cost of painting when the rate of painting 1sq cm. is Rs.5. The side of the cube is 16 cm

Solution: Side of a cube = 16 cm

Surface area of the cube = 6 X 16^2=6 X 256=1536 ;cm^2
